My Story

My name is Cory and this is my story about making my dream come true. I've always dreamt of owning and running sled dogs. In September 2007, I was lucky enough to acquire my first dog, a Siberian Husky pup. As a new owner of a sled dog, I contacted and became friends with some local mushers. I found the mushing community to be very friendly and willing to help me learn about the sport. The more I learned, the more I knew that this was something I needed to pursue seriously. The Iditarod is the ultimate race, and I knew that one day I needed to be there so I sent out an email to many of the current sport leaders to ask them what I needed to do to achieve my dream. I was surprised to hear from so many people willing to help a newcomer in the sport. Not all were supportive, but some not only gave suggestions, they offered to help teach me all about mushing. Of course, the best place to do that is in the state of Alaska. I will be heading there in April to begin training for my summer job which will be with the Seavey family, one of the best known in the mushing community. I will be taking care of 150+ dogs, training puppies, training myself as a musher, and using all these new skills to give the Alaskan tourists a special sled ride. Yes, I will be the musher!
